To Salmon P. Chase

[May 17, 1862]

No commanding general shall do such a thing, upon my responsibility, without consulting me. A. LINCOLN.

This note was in reply to a letter from Chase, May 16, 1862, “Obliged to go to Philadelphia this afternoon I cannot confer with you as I wish in relation to the Military order of Maj. Gen. Hunter. . . . it seems to me of the highest importance. . . that this order be not revoked.”
